Anyone got any advice?
I need some advice about letting go of an old story of mine
I’ve been working on it obsessively over 3 or 4 years now at this point. However I’ve made little to no progress on it. I really like the characters, so I’ve always held out hope ig? I keep trying to drop it but then a couple days later I get a cool idea for the plot (or at least what I think is a cool idea lol) and I trick myself into working on it again. I’m not sure what to do anymore.

Happy to help! And you too =D
Ok yeah that makes sense
I can’t thank you enough, honestly
I hope you have a good day or night
You gotta keep in mind that it needs to be simple enough for the viewers to understand. Not EVERYTHING needs to have this universal depth to it! Give depth to what's important, and keep some things simple, simple enough that a reader can talk about this story to a friend without exploding their own brain. Main characters can have depth, and SOME side characters, but don't give everything importance. Be selectful in what you give depth to. Like a painting, the main object is detailed and all, but that bush back there is literally a couple of brush strokes, yet it all comes together.
also, no worries! You're not disregarding anything, honest answers are the best answers =>
You’re right, and I absolutely would follow through with the story. Sadly that’s only half of my problem
However I also find myself getting distracted from actually making progress, and instead wasting time focusing on what I best describe as fluff ( none essential story parts). It’s extremely frustrating and embarrassing lmao. I keep telling myself I’ll do better but I don’t, and I haven’t for 3 years. I have to wonder if I actually have any material at all, or if it’s just wishful thinking because I’m too attached to the characters.
Also seriously thank you for your advice, I hope that it doesn’t seem like I’m disregarding it in any way.
But the act of FINISHING and POSTING it is really, really good, because you are much more likely to finish other stories and put MORE out there. Giving your all to you're first story is what most people would do, and that's why only some actually finish it. Relax mate and have fun with it! You are your most brutal critic, but that doesn't mean others will think the same.
