He was, from my understanding, a kind and gentle man, with a dark, argumentative, controlling side. When his wife- Eleanore Ball Laurens, who I’ll do a tribute for soon- died, she left him without a mental caretaker. He slowly went insane, becoming mentally and emotionally abusive to his children. That’s my understanding and take on it, at least.
