Character design practice.
Iodine is most commonly found in table salt, where it's intentionally used to substitute for a small amount of sodium in order to prevent thyroid problems. It's also a common medical disinfectant when dissolved in alcohol, plays a role in the UV strips on genuine banknotes, was historically used in photography film, and is used in some rocket engines. Historically, radioactive fallout often contained radioisotopes of iodine, so large amounts of stable iodine would be given to the afflicted to flush the radiation out of their systems and prevent thyroid cancer.
It's also a very pretty element.
