As a beginner just starting to draw illustrations, I’ve heard that improving your drawing skills requires copying, but I think that realization only comes after getting some practice under your belt. Initially, tracing is helpful for familiarizing yourself with hand movements, line strength, and rhythm. Jumping straight into copying can feel challenging since it requires considering structure and balance on your own, which can feel overwhelming.
Starting with tracing to get a feel for drawing clean lines, then stepping up to copying, seems like a good way to make the most out of practice. Copying builds observation skills and helps improve accuracy in reproducing shapes, so I want to approach it with a solid foundation. After all, improving drawing skills starts with having a strong base. I feel that balancing tracing and copying will be an effective way to keep motivated and keep progressing with each practice session.
