This character was based on the indigenous people of my country, Brazil.
I wanted to represent the connection with nature that the original peoples here had and some still have, taking only what they need and living in harmony with plants and animals.
Specifically about my character, her name, Aruana, refers to the indigenous meaning of “sentinel”. I drew her as a warrior who protects animals, especially those that are currently vulnerable and endangered. Her clothing has items from different peoples, which I decided to mix and add others of my imagination to represent a warrior.
I hope that, like Aruana, everyone can understand the importance of nature and all living beings, and live in harmony with them.
