Elemental chlorine (№ 17), a yellow-green gas at room temperature, at high concentration is extremely dangerous, and poisonous to most living organisms. As a chemical warfare agent, chlorine was first used in World War I as a poison gas weapon.
Elemental bromine (№ 35), a volatile red-brown liquid at room temperature that evaporates readily, is toxic and causes chemical burns on human flesh. Inhaling bromine gas results in similar irritation of the respiratory tract, causing coughing, choking, shortness of breath, and death if inhaled in large enough amounts. In the early years of the First World War, bromine compounds such as xylyl bromide were used as poison gas.
