Concept art of creatures called primal spirits that you will get to see Jack communicate with in the comic.

The drum is the most important tool of a Heahttan shaman and its main use is to sing these beasts into revealing themselves. The primals grant the shaman their favour and this way allow the drummer to use their form. They can however, at any point refuse access to these abilities and take it away if they deem the shaman unworthy. Maintaining a good relationship with each individual spirit therefore is essential to ensure the shaman is never abandoned in a tricky situation.
The dog was the first spirit to grant Jack its favour.
Jack's clothing is inspired the national garb of the Sami people called gakti. This side of the story therefore also takes a lot of its influence from their folklore.
