Plague Doctors are notoriously known for they're creepy bird-like masks. Believe it or not, they made them creepy to scare away 'ghost and demons', they also shaped them as beaks because they believed the plagues were spread by air.
Most of the time, second rate doctors, and sometimes even regular people, dressed as plague doctors and fooled towns into thinking they actually could cure the people. Because the mayor/governor paid the Plague Doctor directly, he would cure the rich, as well as the poor. That is, if he knew anything of how to cure the plague.
Rumor hasn't that they even stuffed they're masks with rose petals and other nice smelling objects to block out he smell of the dying people.
Ironically enough, they usually succeeded in spreading the plague more often then they healed it.
