Gaia in Greek mythology is Mother Earth, as a primordial and latent element of immense generating potential. According to Hesiod, in the beginning Eurínome appears (the Cosmic Sea), She generates Ofion (the Light) and from the union of both Gaia, Tartarus (the abyss), Erebus (the darkness) and Nix (the night) are born. Gaia alone generated Uranus (the Sky), Ponto (the sea) and the Óreas (the mountains). She bore Uranus, with the desire to have someone who would cover her completely, and for there to be an eternal home for the "blessed" gods. With Uranus, Gaia spawned the twelve titans: Oceanus, Céos, Crio, Hyperio, Iapetus, Web, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, the golden-crowned Phoebe and the beloved Tethys; at last was born Kronos, the youngest and most terrible of her children, who hated his father's lust.
