Serial (or just ser) is a AU of killertale, where killer’s soul inexplicably transformed, giving him his empathy and emotions back.
This. Leads to a rush of regret lasting sense his first kill, driving him further down the path of insanity (and making the personality of killer in his head).
All of this only helped to release ser’s true LOVE & making him more dangerous in the process. Nightmare let him go after he saw how much of a dangerous liability ser was to his plans.
Keep in mind that ser is a separate sans from killer, & that they don’t share a body. Killer is the “canon” sans of killertale, & ser is just a more violent, emotional, & older version of him.
