Following the Broken Glass

"Often considered “the point of no return” by environmental scientists, Stage IV of the Obverse's Exhale begins when first generation Reversed pass on, leaving their second generation offspring to inherit the land.
Owing to the dust-like particles produced by Reversed flora, the ground is gradually obscured by a layer of black sand. If left undisturbed, the sand develops a glass-like appearance and feel, cracking like brittle ice when disturbed. Due to its coarse texture and sharp grains, running the sand through one’s fingers is ill-advised.
At first glance, these 'glassed lands' appear uninhabited. In reality, the majority of Reversed flora and fauna are adapted to surviving beneath the sand. Flora eke out an existence by consuming whatever material they can until their inevitable consumption by herbivorous glasswyrms. Meanwhile, predators make excellent use of their sensitivity to vibrations, prowling for prey among the grains - and, sometimes, above the glass."
