四月。新学期。
私は緊張して自分の教室に入った。
何人もの「クラスメイト」がいたが、当然私は誰も知らなかった。わざとそんな学校を選んだのだ。男の子も女の子も、どの顔にも個性というものが感じられなかった。白く光っているように思えた。
「鳥がはじめて、天から降って来た時には、どいつもこいつも、みな一様に白でした」という童話の一節が浮かんだ。
「つばめだ！」誰かが叫んだ。
「きゃあ」女の子たちが悲鳴をあげた。見ると一羽のつばめが教室の天井をものすごい勢いで二、三度回って、そして外に飛んでいった。
「うわあ、びっくりしたなあ」ある男子がいった。何人かの子達が笑った。
私もなんだか、緊張が解けた気がした。あのつばめは私達を歓迎してくれたのだろうか。そんな気がした。
April. New semester.
I got nervous and entered my classroom.
There were several "classmates", but of course I didn't know anyone. I couldn't feel any individuality or anything on every face, boy or girl. It seemed to be glowing white.
A passage from a fairy tale came to my mind, "When birds first came down from the sky, they were all uniformly white."
"It's a swin!" Someone shouted.
"Kyaa" the girls screamed. When I saw it, a swinfly went around the ceiling of the classroom two or three times with great momentum, and then flew outside.
"Wow, I was surprised," said a boy. Some children laughed.
I wonder if that swindly welcomed us. I felt like that.
