Lapis legit or spekuk (Dutch: Spekkoek) is a type of traditional wet cake from Indonesia. This cake was first developed during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia which was inspired by European layer cakes. Lapis legit is made from a variety of spices that are very popular with Europeans, including cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, mace, and anise so that it has a very distinctive taste rich in spicy aroma. This cake made from egg yolk, flour, sugar, and butter / margarine has a sweet taste with a soft yet firm texture. The cake dough is baked in the oven in stages until it forms layers that generally add up to 18 layers or more. Because of the many layers on the layer of legit, this cake is also known as a thousand layers cake.
