In short: She is not a human, but a robot made of copper. She was found dumped in a junkyard and then repaired, and somehow she became aware of things herself.
Over time she ended up becoming human, but not materially. She is able to have feelings and understand things that other robots would not understand so well, for the technology or proposal they had at the time she was dumped.
