“Monk Approaching the Monastery on Snowy Peaks.”
-The piece is meant to be read in Chinese style, starting at objects in the bottom right and moving upwards following the composition. Likewise, it’s presented as a Chinese “corner composition,” that is, most of the composition is in the bottom left.
-The composition and style is inspired by Japanese Zen artist Sesshu Toyo’s “Winter Landscape.”
-The piece is meant to represent spiritual growth. A monk struggles to clime up (struggles to attain) a tall mountain to reach the monastery (spiritual righteousness). The trees, representing people in Chinese art, represent he’s improvement: at the bottom small and overshadowed, at the top majestic and freed.
