Passing Periods

For Passing Periods, I wanted to delve into how modern beauty standards influence the way young girls and women present themselves. I utilized the incorporation of objects symbolic to the experiences of a teenage girl- friendship bracelets, mascara wands, phone cases, etc. I chose to use this setting because I thought the mirror would be representative of a complicated self image, and how social media’s imposition of unrealistic beauty standards contributes to teenage struggles to achieve authenticity. With my work, I hope to encourage my audience to consider how modern media can play a role in the increasing amount of teenagers grappling with identity and self worth issues, and what we can do to create healthier, more accepting definitions of beauty. We should strive to foster important discussions among youth communities that address toxic societal pressures on women, and work towards a world that uplifts marginalized voices instead of undermining them.
