The other title that I was considering for this work was "Returning Expat"- I switched to the other title, towards the end of the drawing process, because I wanted to focus more on evoking a feeling of journeying down one's past. Specifically, I wanted to emphasise the journeying aspect rather than the aspect of return- foregrounding the sense of travelling.
I decorated the walls with a variety of old Russian posters of films (and some more generic posters) to physically bring the idea of the past into the illustration and evoke the idea of an individual reconnecting with their past.
In terms of stylistic decisions, I chose purple as the main colour and contrasted it with off-orange yellow to evoke an atmosphere of cosiness and seclusion, giving the girl a suitcase due to its association with souvenirs- and thus memory.
