The Tikbalang are a race of forest spirits or demons from Philippine mythology. John uses the magical powers typical of his race, such as optical or sound illusions, to succeed in his new theatrical career. But since he is a forest spirit, his powers are stronger in wooded or jungle areas and weaken in urban areas. His goal is to be part of the cast of a play worthy of the first prize in the theatrical performance contest, in order to free himself from slavery towards a human who owns a lock of their golden hair, since, if someone owns some of their hair, The Tikbalang are obliged to obey him.
