Nightmare protectors are creatures who are protecting people, who are fall asleep from having dreams and instead giving them nightmares. They visit everyone in at least one form, however when there's more than one then the person won't survive this night.
Sorry if it's a bit too disturbing but yh :)
Quick fun fact: This room was in my dream and apparently person lying in this room is dead.
