So back in college, Paul was that stereotypical douchebag that no one liked. He bleached his hair at one point because he wanted to be cool. At one point he got possessed by a demon-
[Demons, like Cole and Alex, have the ability to possess people. When they do, one of the host's eyes inverts its colours and they turn into something like a half-demon. If said human gets possessed, again, they become a demon themselves. Basically Paul is a half-demon so he can magic real good 👌]
-and nearly died in the experience so he got scared as hell and developed thanataphobia (fear of death). He moved to another city (both are unnamed) and ended up working for Katharos, the secret mad-scientist-lab of the story. There he met Cole and they became friends because why not
