Again I haven't watched the anime so don't get mad at me if it doesn't look like the carictor on the anime.
So I see greed as a nightwing ( if you don't know what that is just search up nightwing wof and click first link) and they weren't gifted with a ability like to see the future or to read minds. So over time they were jealous and wanted more they over time took from others and took jems and wore some of there jewels on there scales. Over time they became the richest dragon but no matter how much jewels or diamonds in could never make her happy. And get time died because of depression and form starvation.
