The giant sea serpent Bakunawa desired and tried to devour Bulan, the moon. Before it could do so, the goddess Haliya defeated it with the help of her kampilan (sword).
Since then, whenever an eclipse occurs, it is said that Bakunawa is once again attempting to devour Bulan and that Haliya will come and save the world from total darkness.
This illustration is inspired on a legend from the region where the Mayon Volcano is located. The Mayon Volcano is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Philippines and attracts millions of visitors every year due to its 'perfect cone' shape. The Legend of Bakunawa is one of my most favorite stories from childhood. I hope you liked it too. :)
