The Gwyllgi is a Black dog of Wales that stalks lonely travelers, scarring them and in some cases attacking! Its name means 'The Dog of Darkness' or Dog of Twighlight.'
When they howl at night, it is said that it scares you so much you go stiff with fear, and if you met it's fiery gaze you would instantly get paralyzed!
In this illustration, I hoped to capture the fear someone might experience if you were to catch a glimpse of this mythical beast. But also to give them a more gentle approach, in my version I see them as abandoned dogs wandering the streets alone, searching for a home but never belonging. So they keep walking and walking... Of course, stumbling across travelers.
If you look closely at the collar, you will see the name I've inscribed, 'Anwen'. In Welsh, the name means very fair, beautiful, and even in some cases gentle. Just to make this so-called beast of the night seem more of an abandoned puppy.
And this is just one of the many amazing Welsh myths to listen too!
