I’ve wanted to draw this for such a long time and I’m scared I didn’t do it justice (I might redraw it next year of the tiger, in 10 years 😭😭😭). Disappointment aside, I love Chinese New Year and wanted to celebrate while drawing, however I had a death in the family and couldn’t draw for a bit. Moving past that, I wish I had incorporated more cultural elements, but I’ll list some of them for you.
The stance kaburi is in is from a type of kung fu called “heihuquan” or black tiger fist, which originated in shandong province. It’s characteristics are a wide sweeping stance with “clawed” hands. The bright orange beads around her are gigantic Buddhist prayer beads on a thick red string, with 11 in total (she isn’t Buddhist however she has lots of respect for it). The little swirly details on her jacket are called frog closures, and she has small bits of embroidery decorating it too.
I still like the way this turned out despite its flaws, and I hope you do too!!!
