Become My Artist

You can become my artist! I am looking for a talented artist for a weekly 4koma (4 panel webcomic) series. I need someone who has the time to make weekly episodes. This will be a seasonal contract. First season serves as a trial run. The series will run on Tapas and Webtoons. If it gets featured or is successful, I will do another season and it will be paid per episode. A season averages about 20-30 episodes.
This series is about the daily life of retail employees.
Those interested can message me or respond here. You must have illustrations on Medibang for me to review or some other website linked in your profile that has your works. If I do not get back to you, don't take it the wrong way but assume that I did not choose you. I am looking for a particular art style, so if I come across someone that I see fit, there's a chance they will be hired!

Q&A Session!!!! Ask us anything!

Hey guys! Kurisu-kun (artist of WataShu) and I are doing a Q&A here! Ask us any related questions to our manga WataShu, or about us in general! We'll answer the questions here as they come all the way up until the release of Chapter 3 -- the final chapter!
Feel free to ask as many questions as you want!

  • > Galaxy Cat That's actually answered in Chapter 3 too. She's 16 years old.

  • How old is Haruka in the story? ( I read this before.)

  • > TitaniumPegasus It started with me getting the idea from a meme that circulated the internet a few years ago. The meme expresses a "what if" situation. It's where the main character knows they are the main character and so they try to avoid being involved in situations a MC would be found in. I wanted to take that much further though. So the base idea for this manga was based on a meme and ultimately means that the manga itself is just one giant meme. You'll probably understand truly once the final chapter releases.

  • What is the story behind you guys creating WataShu?

Finished Storyboards

Storyboard for Ep 1 is done for Paper Bag webcomic. Nia and I are working out some fine background details of the setting and characters; we are also working on the pages now that the storyboard is finished. We want to make this a weekly series, but it most likely won't release until enough episodes are finished. We want to make sure we have enough to pitch the story to Webtoons in order to potentially get featured.
You can check out the updates at patreon.com/sek
After 1 or two episodes are done i'll be offering a new reward tier at $1/month so people can actually see the webcomic super early.

New Artist - Nia

Dango is no longer the artist for Paper Bag.
My friend Nia will be doing the new art. Some of you may have seen Nia on this site already.

  • > Sek 「セク」 okey can't wait

  • > Night T. thanks haha, it was being discussed for a while. Nia and I had a secret project we were working on but decided to put that on hold and work on Paper Bag instead. If we get the time we will do the other project too which just so happens to be a spin off of Paper Bag. huhuhu

  • yes yes yes.. to be honest, I really wanted her to draw for you! Congrats!!!

I DID A THING!

I setup a patreon. Last time it was cluttered and it wasn't for just me. Well now I relaunched the patreon to be a lot better for not just me, but for supporters too! I offer a lot more than before now that I've gotten involved in a ton of new stuff. I can't do much unless I get enough support. Once certain goals are reached on patreon, EVEN MORE REWARDS WILL UNLOCK!!!
I'm not expecting a lot of support yet, but I know I will get more in the future (or at least I hope).
I want to make writing and running my studio my full time job. You guys can help make that happen, even if you support at just $1/month. You still get tons of stuff just for supporting at $1/month.
Please consider, and if you do support then I'd greatly appreciate it <3
Copy/paste this in your browser and learn more - https://www.patreon.com/sek
Thanks for all the support you guys have given me by the way. It means a lot!
I hope you all look forward to the future works I produce.

  • Why not instead of per month, do something like per chapter? Similar of what the author of Mother of Learning did :D

WataShu to END on Chapter 3???

The idea of WataShu was to make it a one-shot with an open ending to lead up to a series.
Sometime during the development of Chapter 2 it was realized that this project really can't continue any longer. It was scheduled to have 5 chapters before ending because Kurisu-kun is unable to continue after that.
The series itself would have had a lot of chapters equivalent to 8-12 volumes of a manga. Sadly, the story has to end at chapter 3.
There will be as much closure as possible. We were going to eventually redo chapter 1 as well to fit the story more but that won't happen either.
I'm sad to say that this is the end of WataShu.
However, as a writer, I want to create a story that I can be proud of. The inspiration for WataShu first came from a meme on a certain site. The story of a girl who is destined to be a heroine with blue eyes and pink hair. Many know of this setup.
I wanted to expand on that idea, and that's when WataShu (short for "doushite watashi ga shuyaku nan desu ka") finally came to light. As the project started, I kept writing the story line and it became more developed, psychological, deep, and filled with drama. Never intended to be a comedy which is why you don't see it tagged as such.
I never made a manga before nor did i know the process of making one. Chapter 1 was a first for Kurisu-kun and I. We learned a lot after making it. With him dropping the series after chapter 3, I feel it gives me a chance to redo WataShu while it's not too late. This isn't the end of WataShu. Just the end of the manga. For now.
I will reboot WataShu as a web novel, Kurisu-kun will still be on board to do the illustrations.
I will be dropping the premise of the story though, it will no longer be about Haruka and her "heroine syndrome." The story will be redone with that omitted.
The characters will remain however, the story will be renamed, and revamped.
I hope you all will understand why I am doing this.
And I sincerely apologize to those who enjoyed the manga to see it end soon.
Please support me on this next adventure and look forward to the new story.
No estimated time it will come.
Until then, I have a new webtoon (not manga) releasing this Summer:
Paper Bag.
More news on that next time.

  • > lenovoaxioo yeah that's my intention. to have at least a full draft of the story. either way, WataShu served its purpose as an intro to the full series. and I hope everyone will look forward to it being a much more fleshed out story.

  • For the future project, maybe you should try to write a complete story first before drawing the manga.

  • >Sek Yeah, that is the reason why I admire those artists, they work harder than anyone :D

  • > S0rahana yeah one artist can only do so much. that's why popular or even most manga in japan have a team of artists working on it. you have the main artist who sketches each page, an inker, and a toner, at the very least. For us, it's just Kurisu-kun illustrating and me writing while doing the page layouts.

WataShu Chapter 2 Release Date

It'll be posted here and on Tapastic on May 20th.

  • > S0rahana ohh yeah we stopped patreon since we didn't get enough support as we expected. we may do patreon again in the future but we aren't sure.

  • > Sek I've thought of it since the patreon page link is gone :D

  • > S0rahana it's just slow progress because the artist is the only one drawing this. we don't have a team of assistants to help like other mangaka.

  • So C2 is out, I honestly thought that you abandoned this already... glad that a good work is still alive :D

WataShu Chapter 2 and Winter anime

We'll start illustrating it later this month probably. But yeah, the manuscript is done and going through final edit phase. I'll post more news as time passes.
Meanwhile, I still don't know how to use this site properly. If i'm making these posts incorrectly feel free to let me know haha xD
Citrus was announced for anime adaptation. Masamune-kun's Revenge anime coming this winter too. I'm hyped cuz both series are great references for my manga. I learned a lot about panel layouts from them. Chapter 2 is going to really show the differences I learned compared to chapter 1.
These chapters take a few months to illustrate, so don't expect it to be publicly available until Spring 2017.
Want to access it earlier, then there is a way. More on that in later update :3
