Sure. Step 1: have a plan. I start with a genre, who my target audience is and what I want to tell. For example: I want to write a comedic, loosely bound story around highschoolers. My target audience willl be teenagers that like anime. -> Therefore: I'll make a 4-koma, slice of life comic. I'll avoid going into realms of fantasy and sci-fi for no apparent reason because that is not what people would expect.
