I laugh with them, cry with them, and get angry with them. It's an entirely different type of emotional understanding. My characters are my best friends and my children. They're dear to my heart. When I kill off one I mourn the loss of a child. I know they had to die for the sake of storytelling, but I can usually never forgive myself in the process.
