Frostbite’s backstory Chapter 3
“We’re moving.”
“Wait What?!” Asked a puzzled North.
“I found a town close by and thought we could move there,” Frostbite said, packing a few things in a small sack, “We won’t be so cramped like we are here and there will be other Icewings.”
“Awe come on! We’re Icewings! We don’t need OTHER Icewings!!” North pouted.
“My decision is final.”
“Ugh. I don’t like this at all!”
“Being an Icewing isn’t all about what you like. Icewings must adapt to what’s thrown at them. This is how we’ve survived in such harsh conditions so don’t even start with that,” Frostbite growled causing him to flinch , “Would you rather sink so low and live the life of a Nightwing who’s life is filled with anything they want and are catered to be Rainwings!?”
North dipped his head in submission and growled, “No.”
“Then it’s settled,” she replied, tying up the sack and walking out of the hut, head held high, “Come on! What are you waiting for!”
“For you to change your mind” North mumbled. Frostbite looked at him with a snarl but hen turned around and took off. North sighed and reluctantly took off after her.
.
After a few hours of flying, the small town was visible. Frostbite dove down and landed before the town. North followed closely behind. Many Icewings scattered the village causing him to nervously shuffle his wings. Frostbite entered the town, scanning the area. Several Icewings stared, causing North to lower his head.
“Don’t lower your head,” Frostbite growled,”It shows weakness and you want everyone to see how superior and powerful you are.”
North lifted his head and held it high, trying to ignore the stares. He cautiously stayed right behind his mother. He didn’t want to admit it but deep down he felt scared and weak. Weaker than any Nightwing could ever be.
The thought of judging eyes staring down at him. Whispering about him and talking about him. Secretly laughing at his weakness; all gave him a sick terrifying feeling that no Icewing was supposed to have.
‘If Mother ever found out... w-would she call me a Nightwing?’ He thought. North shivered at the thought of being as low as those terrible creatures. His thoughts were interrupted when he bumped into Frostbite after she stopped to open the door to their hut.
Frostbite turned around and snarled at her son, “Watch where you’re going North! Do that to any other Icewing here and you’ll be as dead as a Nightwing!”
“No you will!” North growled as he followed his mother inside. The place was big. Almost three times the size as their old hut. It also felt warm. ‘Warm? How does that work?!’ North wondered, continuing to explore the bigger hut.
Frostbite lead him to a small room. Inside was a window placed over a small soft ledge and a shelf for scrolls.
‘Who needs scrolls’ North scoffed in his head,’Scrolls are only for puny creatures like Nightwings’
“This is your room,” Frostbite said.
“Three moons I have my own room!” North cried happily. He didn’t even care how improper it was to shout.
“Yes you do. Knock yourself out,” Frostbite said leaving the room.
North waited a few minutes before leaving the room himself. He walked out of the hut looking around before crashing into another dragon causing him to fall.
“Oh moons and stars! Just my luck!” Said an unfamiliar voice, “Sorry let me help you up!” She said reaching out a talon. When North was back on his feet, he was startled to see what was standing in front of him.
The dragon he crashed into was an icy blue but her horns were tipped with a golden brown. She had amber eyes and a creme coloured underbelly. And instead of spikes going all the way down, they morphed together to form a sail at the base of her tail. She had no whip thin tail. Instead was a small tiny barb at the end of her tail like a Sandwing. ‘Was She part Sandwing?’
“What are you?” North asked.
“I’m a hybrid. Sandwing and Icewing to be exact,” she replied.
‘I was right!’ North thought,”Oh okay.”
“My name’s Coyote!” She said waiting for an answer.
“Oh um... I’m North,” he said. This dragon was weird. North wasn’t sure of her but all he knew was that any Icewing who decided to mate outside of the tribe was a disgrace.
“Y-you wanna be friends? I mean you don’t have to. I’m just surprised that you’ve talked to me this long!” She said nervously, “Most of the other dragonets shun me.”
He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t want to come out as rude but he certainly didn’t want to associate himself with a hybrid. Then his call was answered when someone, supposedly her parent, called her name.
“I’m coming!” Coyote called before running towards a small hut. North sighed with relief as he walked towards his own hut. He walked towards his room and sat by the window watching the pink sky, grow dark. ‘Sundown already?’
North curled up on the soft ledge trying to fall asleep. However no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t. Even with the soft ledge. Even with the warm air. Something still felt cold.
North sleepily got up and wandered around the hut until he found his mother’s room. Frostbite was curled up on her own ledge. He curled up next his mother and fell asleep.
