Still Around and Kicking

Yep... I'm still working on my projects, and sorry for the lack of stuff posted here, I just have not been in the mood for any drawing lately. It's just a slump that'll pass eventually, but I've not given up.
The first volume is being chipped away at like a giant marble sculpture, and like so the time will come where I can finally pull down the curtain to reveal it.
Don't worry, I'm not getting sucked into the infinite hole of perfectionism that many fall prey to in this field. It's just that I have a standard that needs to be met before I'm willing to sign off on the first volume, because it needs to make a really stellar first impression, as the selling point for the series to come.
I know it's been a little radio silent all around, which I take to mean everyone else is hunkered down working away on their own endeavors, so I hope you're all faring well. Just keep at it, and we'll eventually get to the point where we can proudly declare projects as "done!".

Just a Small Update

Hey people who read this! I'm still working on my story stuff, deep in the mines of brainstorming and planning while I'm getting it all sorted out for further work. Sadly haven't been doing a lot of drawing, just cuz I haven't felt particularly inspired nor am I at the stage where drawings need to be done. They'll get made at some point and I'll share what I have when it's done of course. But, for now...yeah, kinda just "stuck" in the long process of starting the story. I'm enjoying it though and I think it'll turn out well in the end. Other than that, the plan is switch focus to getting the first volume done, starting in a week or two probably, and that'll give a much better idea to readers what this story is like, once I get around to sharing it. I hope everyone else's projects are going smoothly! It's been a slow month or two for me, but eh, that's just how it goes with creative stuff sometimes. I hope you all keep working hard and I'll be glad to see what you make too!

Floating an Idea

Everything's going about as good as can be expected, and I'm still working a lot on writing stuff, but I don't want to neglect putting some up here to look at. So, the idea is to make an artbook of the characters and misc stuff from the oneshot I've been posting about. It wouldn't be super long, probably only 30 pages or so, but I'd like to give a bunch of art to look at all at once, instead of infrequent scattered posts, and they'd all be in one spot. It likely won't be in color, and might take a while to make if I only do one complete drawing a day, as that would still take about a month for me to finish. Of course I could maybe draw more than that, but there's a lot of writing and planning that still needs to get done, and that takes precedent right now. Anyway, feel free to let me know if you'd like to see an artbook. Hope you all are doing well!

  • > Abyssal It's definitely crazy, but I am still working on my projects the best I can! The art fair was, thankfully, only postponed till September, but honestly no one can say how this will develop so I'm trying to plan to open an online store if it is cancelled. Still gotta make money on it hahaha Art books are awesome in my opinion, and it is such a great exercise in illustration and, since you're using your characters, getting to practice them and get used to their designs more, designing outfits and poses and whatnot, that'll be great creatively! I hope it goes well! Also, hope you're staying safe and healthy right now!

  • > Nass Thanks for the encouragement! It might not be as cool or impressive as an actual manga, but I still think art books can be neat if done well, so I will at least give it a good go. Besides that, I hope your projects are going well, given how things are right now. It might be a sore topic, but did that art fair you were going to attend get cancelled?

  • Yeah, if you have the time you can allot to it, I think an art book would be great drawing practice, and it would give an opportunity to see the characters! I say go for it!

Writing Milestone Update!

Whew...So, I'm now halfway done with writing the script for my actual manga, which is written somewhere in between "play script" style and actual prose, just so I know how to arrange and direct scenes later when drawing them. It's only semi-final for now, as I'll do one last huge pass for editing when the other half is done, but I am rather pleased with what I have so far. It's probably going to end up a bit niche, but I wouldn't expect otherwise. Anyway, it feels like a really long script, with 171,000 words, but it's only like six and a half volumes worth of chapters, so it actually isn't that long. They might be kinda beefy chapters and on the thicker side of manga volumes, but I don't even have an idea yet of how long the volumes will actually be until I start making them. Other than that, I'll keep working away on getting this script finished and I'll let you guys know when that happens! Still super excited about this project, even if it is a draining and daunting task!

Looking Back and Ahead

So, it's been about a year now since I began the difficult task of trying to become a mangaka, and I feel as though I have made decent progress, but could have done a lot more. For one, I took several week long breaks that added up to probably about three months of not practicing, so that didn't help. The good news is that the writing side has gone better, though still suffered from breaks and blocks, too. Still, if anyone does read this, I think all of my friends on here have improved a lot just in the year that I've known them, and I'm proud of all of you! Your manga have all looked great, and I'm sure you'll improve even more! Though, if you can spare the time, I'd like to know what you guys think of my improvement so far. Considering the fact that I started from absolutely no drawing experience, I'd say I've done pretty well. I do want to give a sincere thanks to my friends on here, as you guys are really the only source of encouragement I have. So thanks, and stick with me!

  • So yeah, part of the reason I don't post so much despite being a beginner in sore need of practice, is because I'm juggling it with working on writing a full length manga series. Dream big, right? But, also I just really don't like writing small and short stories with little complexity to them. Hence the multiple cancelled oneshots, but have no fear, Sashiba has not bet cancelled, just very slow progress on it, and it only really is for practice, not a super serious project. I plan to get the script for my main manga done within the next six months or sooner, and once it is I'll have a lot more time to draw. It'll get mainly taken up by finalizing character designs, and all the other art assets, but I'll let you know when that milestone gets hit, cuz I'll be pretty happy.

  • For my main manga project, I am done-ish writing 32 chapters, with more than that left to go still, so it's going to take a while yet. But, what I have written I am extremely happy with and I'm sorta glad that I allowed myself to take so long, because the story has gone through some major rewrites and shifts, making it far better than it was going to be near the start. I've really leaned into my own writing style and although it's a frantic mess full of near crazy people with a lot of weird stuff going on, I'm content with where it's sitting. What I can share about it is that yes, it is a sort of superhero themed story, but that's only the surface flavor. The main character is really the massive mega city that it takes place in, with numerous povs for the story to unfold. There's guns, drugs, tons of swearing, violence, gore, hallucinations, mad ravings, supernatural beasts, gangs, dark schemes, politics, friendships, and of course some hopefully cool super powers.

Some More Music Sharing

I know I've mentioned it a few times, but here's some sample tracks of the albums I almost always have on when drawing or writing. It's immensely helpful to have some background noise that you can stand listening to for hours on end, and maybe they'll fit your tastes as well. So here's the youtube links to the songs:
If These Trees Could Talk - The First Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQSiSqCiaDM
Miroist - Are we leaden yet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-JQ17RvMks
Kerretta - Warnlands https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO1N7XVdOWI
Tuber - Luckily Dead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-omWO504QkE . If you do like them, I can direct you to the albums they're from, as well as the others that I like, if you want.

Chapter 1 "Cover" Art Done

Link: https://medibang.com/picture/rx1908271701415130005968646/
Here's the full-page art for the first chapter of the oneshot, well, the only chapter of it for now. It's not perfect, but to be fair, I think this is the first time I've drawn the same characters twice. It's not so simple to make them look "exactly" the same each time, especially not with my skill level, but I think they look passable enough. I'll worry about it if it becomes a big enough problem, but that struggle will go away with time I'm sure. Anyway, thanks for reading and taking a look!

New Cover for the Oneshot

I remade the cover for my oneshot I'm working on, as I wasn't really feeling the old one, link here because of 5mb limit: https://medibang.com/picture/rx1908221608181990005968646/ . I think this one looks better, but as my comment on there says, I'd be open to coloring it in, I just want some feedback on the monochrome version first. Thanks for reading, and I hope all of your projects are going well! It still gives a lot of motivation having friends on here that are capable of making some pretty good looking stuff!

Some more drawing practice

Link to image, as again too big to post here: https://medibang.com/picture/uy1908081603211940005968646/ The torso, thighs, and inner clothing were drawn off of some reference for anatomy, as I'm still learning that, but the rest is drawn off of me, meaning no fan art this time. Did this drawing to keep up practice with drawing figures, as well as to try to make a good looking color drawing. Still a lot to improve on, but I don't think it turned out too bad. Feel free to let me know what you think, and thanks for reading.

Satsuki Kiryuin Fanart

(Link to post, file too large to post on this section): https://medibang.com/picture/c71907281052395870005968646/
Felt like doing some more fan art, this time of Satsuki from Kill La Kill. I was originally intending to do something with an intricate background, but I'll save those for drawings focused on just that. I'll need to practice architecture and perspective on buildings soon, but not this time. Anyway, not a lot to say on this one, but I hope you enjoy it and any feedback is welcome as always. Thanks for reading!

Hanmei!

Meet Hanmei, the third and final member of "En's #1 Fan Club"!. Hopefully you like her design, as I enjoyed making it and all the others as well. Now that all the characters have been made properly, the only thing left is to actually draw the darn oneshot. Not gonna' lie, you'll be waiting a while to see the whole thing, as I'm spending the next two months putting together proper documentation for my main manga project, as well as intensive writing to complete the remaining 59 of 78 planned chapters. So, this is really only going to be worked on in snippets during breaks or off days. That's not to say I won't share anything during that time, however. I plan on sharing (if they're done during this time) the "chapter cover art", a finished page or two, and some of the extra pages at the end, along with any other practice or fan art I'll squeeze in. I'm not going to go dark, but I also won't promise a steady stream of posts. Thanks for reading, and hopefully things go as planned!

Kei

Here's Kei, the second member of the fan club. I'm pretty pleased with how her design turned out, she's supposed to be shorter than the others, but without them for scale it might not look like it, I dunno. Anyway, I tried to make her look intimidating, but not in a scary psycho way like Yami does, instead more of a casual air to it. I think I got it, but let me know how you feel on it. Any other feedback is also appreciated. Thanks for looking, and the third and final member of the fan club is up next!

Aroko

Welp, it's a little later than I wanted to get it done, but here she is. Aroko, the leader of the three girl group that's the self proclaimed #1 Fan Club of the head Sorcerer En. They aren't full fledged sorcerers themselves, so they don't have masks, but that doesn't stop them dressing the part. Basically, their style is supposed to be similar to En's fashion sense, while not being a direct copy, but still retaining the mushroom motifs as well. I think her design went pretty well, especially the shoes and the hair, but feel free to leave any feedback of your own. Thanks for looking!

  • > Abyssal Yoma Ah, the mushroom, it looks like a mushroom for sure, with a decayed effect going on, so I think it's good! The bottom looks a little like it has roots, which isnt bad, but it made it look a little more tree like than mushroom like, as far as critiques go. Yeah, it definitely will speed up as you design more, but spending a proper amount of time on designs isnt a bad thing of they turn out well, which is the case so far!

  • > Nass Haha, I'm pleased you liked the shoes! I wasn't so sure mixing the "scale dress shoe" with a large punk "boot" would work as an idea, but yeah I'm definitely going to re-use these shoes in other works at some point, they're too good not to. And I'm right there with you, as I'm designing more characters, I really am starting to like the creative process behind it. It may takes weeks longer for designs to cook in my head than I would like them to, but that'll speed up one day. At the very least, I certainly am a lot more comfortable drawing clothing and such, which I think my fan arts helped quite a bit with. Anyway, thanks again for the kind words and keeping up with my posts! Oh, also, how does the mushroom at her feet look? There's a lot of mushrooms in Doro when En is involved, so I'm needing to draw those well too.

  • Yeah, I'm developing a love for your fashion sense. Those shoes waaaah, you're doing a great job, so keep it up! I think it's awesome, and you have a talent for clothes. I also really like the stylized anatomy. Yes!!

Yami

So here's the design drawing for Yami, the second character of my fan oneshot. I've kinda been doing these in reverse order of how I normally design characters, as I normally have them fully made on paper, before touching their visual design way later (obviously slightly designed in my imagination early on). So, there's not a whole lot to say other than she's Sashiba's "friend", and is an actual sorcerer as well. Next up is to design a trio of characters, members of a self-proclaimed "En's #1 fan club".

  • > Abyssal Yoma I always use references for things as well. I'm considering using this the next time I draw someone really skinny lol

  • > MortalMangaka> MortalMangaka I know what you mean, really. Her arms had to be redrawn so many times, and they're still not fantastic. Drawing arms with basically zero muscle is actually kinda tough to not look weird. Although I will admit I have a cheat code sitting next to me for the legs, in the form of a figure of Milinda Brantini from Heavy Object. So when I want to draw really thin legs, I just look over to my right a bit and use that for reference.

  • I want to draw people skinny like that but I always mess it up lol

  • > Nass Thanks for the kind words and it's good you found her creepy! Part of why I'm doing this oneshot is to get practice with designing the "creepy, gritty, punk" characters. Yami was a bit easier to give the look I wanted, because the sorcerer masks in Doro can get really cool and weird looking, lending to their style a lot. The next ones are going to be a bit more subtle, as they won't have masks as "crutches", so that'll be a good little stepping stone for design work. Buy anyway, I'll look forward to seeing Kaylah in her boots as well, and I'm glad the anatomy on this didn't look weird as Yami's a good bit thinner than females I've been drawing.

Remember Sashiba?

It's rated mature, based on guidelines, but it's really pretty tame: https://medibang.com/picture/4y1906091031488930005968646/ . Here's the cover art for a fanmade manga that might see the light of day at some point. It's a mix of Q Hayashida's original characters and my own creations, set in the world of Dorohedoro. Q Hayashida reserves all rights to the original content of her work on Dorohedoro, I'm just a fan adapting it, and make no claim otherwise. Hopefully it goes better than my other failed attempts at oneshots, as this has a lot more passion and excitement behind it.

Question for Fun

Question: What is the most visually appealing anime you've seen? (movies and OVAs apply too) My answer: K-Project. It might not have the most fluid animation, but damn if it doesn't have really good art direction, as well as some really cool scenes with good general direction. Like the parts with Yata on his skateboard, or the various Kings' abilities in action, and the big rooftop fight at the start of season 2, it left a lasting impression on me.The anime never really stops feeling like it has cinematic levels of production, at least to me. There are plenty of close seconds to it, mostly by Madhouse, but studio GoHands did a great job with this, as far as everything visual is concerned. [Edit] Here's the S2 fight scene I mentioned, on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8I95WL9H08 . It's about as high resolution as you can easily find for the whole thing, and there is some fanservice starting at 4:50 in, just for fair warning. There's not really any major spoilers either.

  • > MortalMangaka Dude, Hellsing Ultimate is beyond badass. It's one of those shows that deserves yearly re-watches just to soak up all it has to offer. Alucard is unquestionably the best vampire ever, and his fighting style is so cool! Someone who has infinite ammo because he simply forgets to reload is not someone you want to mess with. Not to mention how iconic his design is with those tinted glasses and red cloak. Anyway, it's cool if you read a lot of manga instead, there's plenty of awesome manga to enjoy, many of which don't ever get adapted or get crap ones. So it's still time very well spent.

  • As far as animation goes, I enjoy the Hellsing OVA series. I don't watch much anime though, I really just read manga.

  • > Nass How did I not know about Girugamesh? Probably because they're a little old, and disbanded. But, I listened to their albums "Music" and the self titled "Girugamesh", and yeah, I definitely liked most of it. I liked "Music" a bit more than the other, with the slight electronic and hip hop influence it has, but they are both pretty good as I still like more standard sounding "metal" as well. The track that stood out the most so far was the chorus to "evolution", it's pretty catchy. Stuff with vocals is too distracting to write to, but I'll probably listen to them some more while drawing. Thanks for spoiling me with more cool music to listen to while drawing and stuff. On a side note to "Music", I love the cover art for that album, too. Heavy industrial architecture just fits the aesthetic of metal and punk so well.

  • > Abyssal Yoma But, i dont know how mucb i would reccomend angel beats anyways. I dont know about anyone else, but the dub for me was the most hilarious thing in the world at the time, and im not sure how well its aged... And the whole end arc was kind of a mess and i couldnt really explain it to anyone. I think its at its best when its focusing on one character at a time, so about one half of the show... i dont know, its not always great, but when it hits the mark it hits it so cleanly and powerfully that it has seared itself into the minds of everyone who was 14 years old when watching it haha, so i guess it depends on your tastes. It is emotional, tho, unless youre the cynical type who will get mad at it for trying to tug at your heartstrings. But if you ever get around to it, It might be awesome. I loved it!

Half Practice - Half Fanart

First off, the character is "Hummingbird" from Deadman Wonderland, and she definitely has an attitude, if you're not familiar with her. The top drawing is me trying to get some all-in-one practice on foreshortening, facial expression, and perspective (fish-eye in this case). The bottom is her drawn in profile, as I desperately need to practice profile drawings more. This is the first decent one I've ever done of it, so there's that. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out, but let me know if there's any feedback or criticism you have. There might, might, be a color version of the top drawing in the next few days or so, no promises though.

Reiju Fan Art: Doro-style (*Updated)

First, sorry for being lazy/distracted, I'll try to go through your guys' stuff that's been posted and give some feedback. As for this drawing however, I took the char Reiju from One Piece, and altered her design a little to try to fit her into Doro' thematically, like I did with my own character Sashiba. I think I did a decent job of getting the tattered gritty look, with small pieces of armor that some wear, and some Japanese influence in places. It's good practice on how to think about more intricate character designs. I also upped the resolution that I was drawing at again, which makes this look even nicer, I think. And, I tried out a slightly different coloring method of using the watercolor brush set to Size: 7-ish, Opacity: 9%, Color Mix: 11, and Compliment: 25. Using two to three shades for each part, and using longer elliptic strokes like coloring with a marker, and purposely leaving small slivers of white space here and there to make the color look less "uniform".

  • (Updated post) FULL DISCLAIMER: I purposely made this fan art look close to Dorohedoro's cover art style, specifically Vol. 5, even with the font. Like I said, I'm trying to do fan art and learn from Hayashida's style at the same time. It's a simultaneous fan art of both, so to speak, a mashup like I've done before. I mean the best by it, so hopefully this isn't crossing the line of what qualifies as fan art. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with how adding in the background turned out, but there's much room for improvement as always. Thanks for looking!

Landscape Practice

It's not the best ever, but I needed to keep up with practice, this time trying out a landscape. This didn't have a whole lot of time put into it, so hopefully my linework isn't too rough, and the detail came through well enough. I think I'm getting better at the style I'm aiming for, but I still have a long way to go. I might have to go back and dig into some good references to figure out how to do ground detailing, we'll see. Probably going to do a detailed drawing of a person next.

Alternate Colored Version of Fan Art

I wanted to practice coloring, so I removed the background from the previous fan art and did some work on it. Disclaimer, the color palette and general background idea are from the Vol 2 Cover of Dorohedoro. I basically took that cover's style and fused it with the fan art to make this. Again, this is fan art of two separate things, I just put them together for practice.

Done: Still Frame Re-Creation(Fan Art)

Alright, I was able to finish the background for it today, so here's the final version. Before you get too excited, this is being drawn from reference, as the whole point was to redraw the still frame and get practice doing so. So this isn't all from my imagination or anything, at least as far as scene composition and structure goes. Credit for the original source goes to the team over at Gearbox. Anyway, let me know what you think of the final thing, like if the style looks good and all that. Thanks for looking!

Work in Progress: Still Frame Recreation

I'm working on redrawing a specific frame from the Borderlands 3 Dev Trailer, trying to keep in the style I'm practicing of course. The psycho in the foreground is almost done, and the bg is going to be the next task. I don't want to clog up the feed with WIPs, but it's been a few days since I last posted and I wanted to show that I am still doing some stuff, even if I should be doing much more.

  • > Nass Thanks a lot for the continued feedback! I'm really happy you loved the pants, because there have been quite a few drawing sessions where I've tried to draw clothing in the style I'm practicing, and just quit because I couldn't for the life of me get the detailing to look good. It's a really simple concept, but tough to do sometimes. As of writing this, I'm about halfway done with the background, and I'm going to try to finish it either sometime today or tomorrow, so be on the lookout for it.

  • The anatomy looks good, and I love the pants! Especially the detail on the belt and such, it looks like there's weight and dimension to it so good job! He definitely looks creepy hahaha, I'm guessing borderlands is a horror game but I'm not sure so I cant comment on how similar it is, but good job! Cant wait to see the background!

Oneshot Progress Update Week 1

I think I've got at the pre-production done, with a finished script, character designs, and other visual elements sorted out for the most part. I've started work on the actual manga pages now, and I'll be devoting this next week to rough drafting all the pages to make sure all the dialogue fits, figure out the flow of panels, etc. I actually finished my first ever panel today that was just a background with a narration bubble on it, and it leads me to think the panels where I mostly have bgs in frame might get done first, some during this drafting phase even, but no promises on that. Thanks for reading, and I hope this project goes well! It's daunting, but a hurdle I'll have to pass at some point anyway.

In regards to the new MCPO contest!

I really want to give you guys on here something to read from me sooner rather than later, and this is exactly the push I need to do it. Coincidentally, I was already planning a Oneshot anyway when this new contest started, and I'll be finalizing the script(not the manuscript, just plain text) for it today. All I'll say about if for now is that it's going to be a grimdark modern setting, with some hopefully interesting world building and characters. It's not going to have any religious themes or anything like that, so this should be readable by all my friends on here. Well, that is as long as you don't mind reading something that has a fair bit of cursing and a little graphic violence. And I know many think it's cringy or edgy to have characters swearing a bunch, but for a setting like this with adult characters, it would feel weird and way too sanitized for my liking otherwise. I'll keep the spam to a min, but I will post milestone updates every week or so leading up to the deadline, to keep my feet to the fire and share my excitement!
