When preparing for the Kyoto illustration contest I found myself really drawned to Mount Atago (the location of the Kuromon Gate). Atago has many fascinating things, one of my favorites was the abandoned railway, unfortunately it didn't quite "spoke" Kyoto to me, after a bit more research I came across the Kuromon Gate and it was a perfect subject. After a lot of reference I finished the gate, also adding a Japanese Macaque. Although I'm not sure Japanese Macaques are found in Mount Atago I'm sure they are found in Iwatayama (also a mount in Kyoto), I just added little details in the Macaque to remember Kyoto's flag (same color scheme and one of the flag's decoration is on the Macaque's chest).
