Tow Tateoka's designs are very detailed, and is a mix of manga style and realism. The artist is also the designer of ART street mascot character, Meimichan! We asked the artist about their secrets of creating such lovely artwork!
How Maimichan was born.
Tow Tateoka:The color of ART street's logo (Pink, black, white) was a combination I am used to, so I didn't struggle with the colors.
There were many other amazing entries, so I feel I was lucky.
The silhouettes are based on the shape of the letter A and S. I also tried to make it look like it would move.
I believe the most important aspect of the character design is the silhouette, and I think the chibi version that you guys created is also wonderful and idealistic.
Personally I love the tail that moves around and even spins, it's really cute!
Tow Tateoka:I'm happy to hear that!
The idea that it spins is something that pushed me to enter the competition, so I like that part as well.
Seeing that on ART street's loading screen was an amazing experience.
Tow Tateoka:A lot of things.
It can be a random idea that came to mind, or a theme of a contest.
I think I am motivated the most when I hear good music that lifts up my mood.
Tow Tateoka:I also listen to live streams of games, but when I do that, it's so fun that I lose focus.
Also in any field, when someone is challenging them self, I feel inspired.
Tow Tateoka:There was a Hikariko character design contest 2 years ago, and I signed up to participate.
I started drawing 4 days before the deadline, so it was a tight schedule.
I remember I was changing the caption 1 minute before the deadline.
It was a fun experience, and I learned a lot.
I am thankful for the great experience, and that I won an award.
Tow Tateoka:With all the new contests and promotions, I could tell the ART street staffs really care about their services, and that is one of the reasons why I continue to use it.
I look forward to the future of ART street.
Tow Tateoka:These days, I mainly created cute characters.
I've always wanted to draw cute female characters, but also felt it was difficult.
Now I am a bit more confident with my female characters.
I would like to keep doing the characters, and also draw what I have always been drawing, such as machines and gadgets.
Tow Tateoka:Thank you for viewing my artwork!
It's difficult to see your own artwork objectively, so I think my viewer's eyes was a big part of my growth.
I read all the comments, and they are important to me.
I hope you keep viewing my new artwork.
